Held roles at JOHCM, Newton Investment Management and Federated Hermes

Andrew Parry, head of investments at JO Hambro Capital Management (JOHCM) and Regnan, has announced his retirement after over 40 years in the investment industry.

Parry took a step back from work at the end of last year due to ill health, and said treatment has been successful. However, he has decided to retire from full-time work and “embrace a slower pace of life”, in a LinkedIn announcement.

Parry joined JOHCM in 2022 to take on the head of investments role, and was previously head of sustainable investing at Newton Investment Management prior to that. He also occupied this role at Federated Hermes from 2017 to 2019 but spent over 12 years at the firm in total. He also worked at Aerion Fund Management, the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme, Pembroke Capital Management and Barings.

“Over the last four decades, investment management has evolved dramatically,” Parry said. “And yet, because investing sits at the intersection of human endeavour and human nature, it remains endlessly fascinating. It attracts those who want to understand how the world works – and where it is going – and also demands a fair dose of competitiveness, if you want to succeed. I am intrigued by how AI will reshape the industry, though I believe that at its core, investing will remain deeply human.

“I have been fortunate to work across a spectrum of disciplines – from asset allocation for pension funds, active equities to hedge fund management and, more recently, sustainable and impact investing. Diverse in their aims, yet all ultimately grounded in delivering returns for clients.”

He also warned of big challenges coming up for the investment management industry: “There is real disruption afoot, perhaps as significant as Big Bang in the late 1980s. While unsettling for many, it also offers an opening for innovation, and long-overdue productivity gains for investment industry. It feels like the right moment to step aside from executive responsibilities and support from a different vantage point.

“I remain curious about our ever-evolving world, especially how the shifting global order and its collision with corporate power and rapid developments in technology will shape investment outcomes. While retirement beckons, I will continue to put my experience to use through non-executive and advisory roles.”

Parry has been a member of the PA Future Committee since 2020 and has contributed quarterly articles as well as his expert insights on the developments in sustainable investing at our Committee meetings, and events.
