BNY Mellon IM CEO hopes to inspire next generation of women in finance

With a unique oversight when it comes to diversity, Hanneke Smits wants to pass on her experience of supportive mentors

Hanneke Smits’ name will be familiar to many. Being one of a handful of women asset management CEOs, and now at the helm of BNY Mellon Investment Management, has afforded her a certain degree of exposure that she now wants to pay forward.

“I feel it’s important to give back to the community we’re part of,” she says.

“You do need to be out there, to show the way to others. I’ve been fortunate to have good sponsors – both male and female – but there are a number of women that were ahead of me that I admired and followed, and it’s important I do the same for the next generation.”
