FE fundinfo’s Mikkel Bates has retired as regulatory manager, PA Future has learned, with Helen Slater confirmed as taking on his role and responsibilities going forward.

Prior to joining FE fundinfo, Bates began his career in financial services in sales and marketing, working at Prolific Financial Management (now Aberdeen Standard Investments) and GLG Partners. He also launched his own marketing company, Belmont Marketing Services, in 2013 and has been a member of the PA Future Committee since 2020. FE Fundinfo confirmed Bates had retired from the group and that Slater had stepped into the regulatory manager role.

Speaking about his departure, Bates told PA Future: “Having spent most of my career in asset management sales and marketing, the last ten years have been very different, dealing with the growing burden of regulation on the industry. The size of the task has ballooned in recent years, with UK rules diverging from the EU after Brexit, the advent of the Consumer Duty in the UK (and the Retail Investment Strategy in Europe) and, of course, the ongoing issues over sustainability classifications and disclosures.

“Ideally, I would have continued until there was some closure on a topic of that magnitude, but I fear that will take too long! I hope that my experience within the industry contributed something to the sum of knowledge at FE fundinfo.”

Bates will continue to provide consultancy work for FE fundinfo, and, after a short break, plans to get involved in financial education.
