Ninety One has recruited Fidelity International’s Paul Gooden (pictured) as co-portfolio manager and lead of the natural resources team.

Tom Nelson, head of thematic equity and co-manager of the Global Natural Resources strategy, will be leaving his portfolio management responsibilities to focus on his family business, but remain in an advisory capacity. He has been at Ninety One for the past 12 years.

Gooden will manage the Global Natural Resources strategy with George Cheveley and Dawid Heyl, who have worked on the portfolio since it began in 2008.

Before joining Ninety One, Gooden spent over 10 years at Fidelity International, beginning as an analyst and becoming co-portfolio manager of the Global Energy and Global Clean Energy strategies.

In his near-30 years in the industry, he also gained experience at Subsea 7, Morgan Stanley and RBS Global Markets.

Mimi Ferrini, co-chief investment officer at Ninety One, said: “Paul brings with him a tremendous depth and breadth of expertise, an outstanding track record and an extensive understanding of natural resources, most especially the energy sector. Throughout their careers, Paul and Tom have primarily focused on high quality companies in the evolving energy sector.

“This experience will provide strong continuity for the team, strategy, and clients. We have planned Tom’s succession together for over a year and believe we have found a perfect fit for Ninety One and the investment team with Paul Gooden. We are grateful for Tom’s contribution over the past 12 years and look forward to continuing to work with him.”
