The problems with plastic

When the message really took hold the world was facing environmental disaster in the early noughties, the principle story was around carbon. At the outset, it got more column inches and, as a result, more fund launches related to solving the carbon problem. But in the past six or seven years, the narrative has focused on the plastic issue, specifically single-use plastic.

The statistics around plastic are shocking. Research from groups such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage and Ocean Crusaders has shown that 8m pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans every day. Experts have predicted that, by 2050, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish, by weight.
